Prelim Project: Initial Footage Evaluation

Framing- comment on the framing of your shot in comparison to the original. Could it be improved? Why do you think the professional shot is so successful?
In the original shot the camera man uses a tripod to create a steady and well organised image where the three by three rule can be applied, with the subject image filling at least two of the possible nine squares. We could not recreate this perfectly due to lack of equipment that we had on hand. In the shot we tried to frame it exactly thereby following the three by three rule of cinematography, which hence creates a professional, aesthetic shot.

Lighting- does your lighting work? What kind of set up have you tried to use or did you rely on ambient lighting? Why do you think the professional shoot used the lighting it has?
In our recreational shot we could not create an intimate and dark lighting seen in the original shot. This is due to the lack of natural lighting which is seen in the original shot. This once again demonstrates our lack of equipment provided. However, we did recreate the focus on the main subject via extra lighting on the model. In conclusion, we did recreate the lighting of the shot, although, we did follow the basics of model shooting i.e main light on the model.

Mise en scene- comment of whether your costume choices were close to the original and what changes could you make to improve your shot. When it comes to mine en scene, we actually recreated the original mine en scene quite well with the background following a square on the window of the frames and the poster.

Camera- while impossible to see from one shot, you could comment on your camerawork. Did you use a hand-held camera or a tripod? Is there any movement in the original shot which you have found difficult to match?
In the shot we used an phone 7 plus to recreate the shot as efficiently as possible. It was hand-held and you can tell as the shot is not steadily keeping in frame. It would have been better to use a tripod, however, this is not possible as there is no iPhone tripod and we could not book the camera efficiently. The ISO and depth of field in the iPhone 7 plus camera is lacking and would have been better with a professional camera.

Actors- Did you find actors well in front of the camera? Comment on how precise you need to be when directing others in a professional shot context.

Obviously, we did not have the budget to hire professional models, although we did direct and produce the shots in the H&M Close the Loop Advert as well as we could. Instead we chose to use our own group and others when it came to filming. So then, we know how to direct each other efficiently.
