Long Form TV Drama: Deutschland '83

The Cold War and who the political dispute involved:
The cold war was a period of geopolitical tension between the Soviet Union with its satelite states, and the United States after World War II. The term 'cold' is used becuase there is no large-scale fighting directly between two sides, bu they each supported major regional wars known as proxy war.

How Lond Did it Last For?
In 1945, one major war ended and another began. The Cold War lasted about 45 years. There were no direct militatry campaigns between the two main antagonist, the United States anf the Soviet Union.

How it affected everyday life for the residents of the countries involved:

  • people suffered a financial crisis 
  • living standards lowered 

How Was Germany Divided?
The seperation of Berlin began in 1945 after the collapse of Germany. The country was divided into four zones, where each superpower was controlled by a zone. In 1946, reperation agreements broke down between the Soviet and Western zones. Response of the West was to merge French, British, and  American Zones in 1947.

The Differnce in Culture Between the West and East Germany:
The unification of Germany was less a merging of the political and economic systems of East and West Germany, but rather a take-over by the Federal Republic of the former German Democartic Republic. East Germany had come to a close. The tension began between the countries began after World War II.

The NATO Exercise 'Able Archer':
Able Archer 83 is the codename for a command post exercise carried out in Novmber 1983 by the North Atlantic Treaty organisation (NATO).
