Horizontal Integration:
Horizontal integration is where an organisation develops by buying competitors in the same section of the market.

Vertical Integration:
Vertical integration is when a media company owns different businesses in the same chain of production and distribution.

 Conglomerate Ownership:
A media conglomerate, media group, or media institution is a company that owns numerous companies involved in mass media enterprises, such as television, radio, publishing, motion pictures, theme parks, or the internet.

How has Disney diversified over the years. Has horizontal/vertical integration take place? what other media areas has disney moved into? Disney Timeline:

1. 1938: September 29, 'Walt Disney Enterprises', 'Disney Film Recording Company', and 'Liled Realty and Investment Company and 'Walt Disney Productions Ltd.' are merged to form 'Walt Disney Productions.

2. 1954: The studio ends its distribution deal with RKO  radio pictures and founds Buena Vista Film Distribution Company inc. to distribute its feature film. Vertical integration distribution. 

3. 1983: Disney Channel begins. With their own TV channel they are able to have the luxury of just playing Disney television shows and films instead of paying another company. This diversification open up to a larger market. 

4. 1987: first Disney store opens: vertical integration (buying toys & stores). 

5. 1993: Disney acquires independent film distributor Miramax Films.

6. 2012: Disney acquires LucasFilms from George Lucas. Horizontal integration.

7. 2015: Marvel studios is reorganised under Walt Disney Studios.

The props within 'American Beauty'  would suggest the idea of the American Dream (house, car, family etc), with Primary colours present throughout these scenes- red,white and blue. This is a representation of the 'good old' American country. As well as this the colours are also bland, simplistic and boring. This is present in the bedroom, bathroom and the office, which could reflect the lifestyle choices of the characters. It is evident that this has also been considered in the choices of clothing with Jane and Lester but less with Carolyn, also known as colour wise. The choices made for Lesters clothing might suggest the idea that he feels like he might be dying or he is already dead. In one particular scene the bedroom is dark on Lester's side of the bed, which might implie that Lester has some form of mental health disorder such as depression. Referendum Analysis

            Analyse why The Big Issue magazine has used an intertextual approach to the referendum on its front cover. 'The Big Issue' has recently issued a front cover magazine addressing the topic of the EU Referendum, also known as Brexit. The Referendum took place on the 23rd June 2016 and the cover has made clear, intertextual references to several personalities, including David Cameron and Boris Johnson. It has also made references to images, texts and the Swedish Pop Group, ABBA. Through the obvious use of intertextuality it has created meaning within the source.  ABBA is a well-known Swedish pop group, formed in Stockholm in 1972 and were popular in the 70s and 80s. 'The Big Issue' has continually referenced the lyrics of ABBAs songs next to  each of the politicians, all of which are relevant to the decision made to leaving the EU.
