Disney- Ownership and Control

Horizontal Integration:
Horizontal integration is where an organisation develops by buying competitors in the same section of the market.

Vertical Integration:
Vertical integration is when a media company owns different businesses in the same chain of production and distribution.

Conglomerate Ownership:
A media conglomerate, media group, or media institution is a company that owns numerous companies involved in mass media enterprises, such as television, radio, publishing, motion pictures, theme parks, or the internet.

How has Disney diversified over the years. Has horizontal/vertical integration take place? what other media areas has disney moved into? Disney Timeline:

1. 1938: September 29, 'Walt Disney Enterprises', 'Disney Film Recording Company', and 'Liled Realty and Investment Company and 'Walt Disney Productions Ltd.' are merged to form 'Walt Disney Productions.

2. 1954: The studio ends its distribution deal with RKO  radio pictures and founds Buena Vista Film Distribution Company inc. to distribute its feature film. Vertical integration distribution. 

3. 1983: Disney Channel begins. With their own TV channel they are able to have the luxury of just playing Disney television shows and films instead of paying another company. This diversification open up to a larger market. 

4. 1987: first Disney store opens: vertical integration (buying toys & stores). 

5. 1993: Disney acquires independent film distributor Miramax Films.

6. 2012: Disney acquires LucasFilms from George Lucas. Horizontal integration.

7. 2015: Marvel studios is reorganised under Walt Disney Studios.
