A Comparison of Two National Newspapers

The Guardian is a Broadsheet Newspaper. Broadsheets are printed onto sheets of paper 116.83 x 81.28cm. However, in recent years they have traditionally used the broadsheet sizes but changed their format. For example, The Times and The Independant have become Tabloid in size, while The Guardian has adopted a new 'compact' or 'Berliner' format. This contrasts with the Tabloid, which is half the size of the broadsheet, with pages measuring 58.4 x 40.6cm. Tabloid audiences are sometimes tagged as 'emotional participants' while Broadsheet Newspapers are sometimes accredited with the tag 'information seekers'. As a result of such changes to both papers the 'Broad Sheet quality press' and the 'Popular Tabloid Press' are now out of date terms. When using codes and conventions you are able to judge the content you expect to be reading. Broadsheet newspapers such as The Guardian cover stories in depth, focusing on politics, economy and 'hard news events'. The Guardian is a left wing paper. Broadly speaking, left wing politics represents Socialist Ideology and supports the distribution of wealth and resources in society. whereas Tabloids, like The Daily Mail, cover more 'soft news' stories, for example celebrity gossip and is referred to as a right wing paper. The right wing politics represents capitalist, free market ideology.

The props within 'American Beauty'  would suggest the idea of the American Dream (house, car, family etc), with Primary colours present throughout these scenes- red,white and blue. This is a representation of the 'good old' American country. As well as this the colours are also bland, simplistic and boring. This is present in the bedroom, bathroom and the office, which could reflect the lifestyle choices of the characters. It is evident that this has also been considered in the choices of clothing with Jane and Lester but less with Carolyn, also known as colour wise. The choices made for Lesters clothing might suggest the idea that he feels like he might be dying or he is already dead. In one particular scene the bedroom is dark on Lester's side of the bed, which might implie that Lester has some form of mental health disorder such as depression.                            The videos Lullaby (Sigala & Paloma Faith), One Kiss (Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa) and Came Here for Love (Sigala & Ella Eyre) have a similar theme of ideology and ethnic imagery represented in their videos. They all carry similar features and music video conventions when concerning mise-en-scene, camera shots and editing. For example, in the three videos above, it shows a very clear representation of the age group which are typically into dance music, this can be identified through the use of age specific actors seen throughout the videos, all seeming to be in their early twenties. Those shown in the video are generally female, this has been purposely done in order to attract viewers attention (Male Gaze) not because the audience is mainly this gender.
